      Sony Alpha a290

      • Launched: June 2010
      • Type: Digital SLR

      • LinksPress release, Product page
Summary: Sony's current entry-level DSLR, and the smaller brother to the a390 (the a390 has a live view mechanism and a tilting LCD on the back). The a290 feels quite basic and cheaply made, but it's good for the money and effective.

            Sony NEX-3

            • Launched: May 2010
            • Type: Compact style hybrid
            • Sensor size: APS-C 23.4 x 15.6mm
            • Resolution: 14.2 megapixels
            • Lenses: Sony e mount
            • Key features: Articulating LCD, Sweep Panoramas, 7fps continuous shooting
            • Links: Press release | Product page
Summary: The cheaper of Sony's two compact hybrid cameras. It has a plastic body and shoots standard HD movies not full HD, but otherwise it's much the same. Good for novices, though some could find the graphical interface slow and simplistic.

              • Links: Press releaseProduct page
Summary: Intermediate-level D-SLR that fits between the low-cost a290/390 and the a500/550, but in fact it beats the a500/550's specs with 7fps continuous shooting, a high-capacity battery  and one of Sony's new14-megapixel CMOS sensors.

                  Sony Alpha a330

                  • Type: Digital SLR
                  • Sensor size: APS-C, 223.6 x 15.8mm

                  • Key features: Quick AF Live View mode
                  • Links: Press release | Product page
Summary: One of Sony's older beginner-level D-SLRs. It has Sony's Quick AF Live View mode, but only a 10-megapixel sensor. The plastic construction, basic kit lens and outdated sensor mean it hasn't worn well.

Summary: Sony's first full-frame D-SLR, offering high resolution at a keen price. But apart from a cheaper a850 version, Sony's full-frame camera plans seem to have stalled.
